In late January, Sigma Technology Group, together with Appbites, and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pristina in Kosovo signed a five-year memorandum of cooperation. This partnership marks a significant step in fostering cross-country collaboration in knowledge exchange, industry development, and research.

The University of Pristina, the largest public university in Kosovo and a member of the European University Association, is one of the leading educational institutions in the country. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering offers education in mechanical engineering, industry, technology, transportation, and related fields. The faculty’s strategic development plan emphasizes the involvement of national and international capacities in scientific research and development activities and the identification of strategic partners in the private sector.

Sigma Technology Group plans to initiate internship programs and lab collaborations in mechatronics, electronics, embedded systems and hardware development, and emerging technologies.

“We see numerous synergies with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pristina. With their dedicated automotive, robotics, and electronics labs we will be able to cooperate on embedded hardware and software development projects, enabling cross-country cooperation, and contributing with industry insights and practical examples. We also aim to explore opportunities for student exchange, master thesis, and internship projects,” says Mattias Gudasic, CTO at Sigma Technology Embedded Solutions.

This partnership aligns with Sigma Technology’s and Appbites’ ambition to become a top three employer in Kosovo in the coming years.

“As a knowledge company, we believe that a better tomorrow can be achieved with education and innovation. We have always believed in the synergy between industry and academia and have successfully collaborated with tech universities in Sweden, Ukraine, and Hungary. Through our partnership with the University of Pristina, we aim to support the academic staff and students in translating academic research into real-world applications, enhancing the quality of education through practical exposure, and ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of the evolving job market in Kosovo,” says Niklas Malmros, President at Sigma Technology Solutions Group.

“We have already been collaborating with the University of Pristina mainly on software development profiles, and now we look forward to expanding our focus into embedded services, particularly PCB board design. Through this partnership, students will undertake internships at Sigma and Appbites, working on real-world use cases from Sigma in Sweden right here in the University’s labs. At the same time, teaching assistants and professors will actively contribute their knowledge, creating a dynamic environment that fosters innovation, hands-on learning, and professional growth for both academia and industry, and I think this is an excellent opportunity for both University and Industry,” says Arianit Pajaziti, CEO at Appbites.

In collaboration with leading industry partners, Sigma Technology Embedded Network is finalizing the “Safer Crossways” project, which is partially financed by Vinnova and that aims at improving road safety with advanced IoT and digital solutions. The initiative focuses on developing open-standard RSU technologies to protect Vulnerable Road Users and drive Sweden closer to its Vision Zero goal.

The initiative addresses a pressing challenge: advancing Sweden’s Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. In 2024, Sweden recorded 210 road traffic fatalities, marking a decrease from previous years. However, this reduction was primarily observed among protected road users, such as occupants of passenger cars, trucks, and buses. Unfortunately, no significant decline was noted for unprotected road users—pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists—who continue to face risks on the roads.

By developing a non-proprietary, protocol-agnostic Road Side Unit (RSU) architecture, the “Safer Crossways” project seeks to improve infrastructure-to-vehicle (I2V) communication, fostering scalable, interoperable, and cost-effective traffic safety solutions.

Sara Dalvig, a consultant at Sigma Technology Embedded Network working on the project, explains: “Imagine a system where traffic lights, vehicles, and road signs can ‘talk’ to each other in real-time, sharing information about potential hazards or pedestrians crossing the road. Using IoT and smart infrastructure, we are creating a connected network that helps drivers make safer decisions and gives vulnerable road users the protection they need. It’s like giving roads and vehicles their safety team.”

Sigma Technology Embedded Network brings expertise in digitalization, IoT, and embedded systems to the “Safer Crossways” project, developing secure and interoperable RSU solutions. By integrating hardware, software, and connectivity, the company ensures cost-effective, scalable systems built on open standards while enabling data-driven decisions for smarter infrastructure and policy planning.

Danilo Chinchilla Sosa, President at Sigma Technology Embedded Network, shares his vision for smart cities: “We believe that the future of urban living lies in smart, connected solutions that enhance both safety and efficiency. Our vision is to drive innovation through technology that seamlessly integrates infrastructure, vehicles, and people. With projects like ’Safer Crossways,’ we are laying the foundation for smarter, more sustainable cities.”

A collaboration of stakeholders from diverse sectors delivers the “Safer Crossways” project:

  • MittLogik Solutions:Experts in wireless technology and automotive innovation.
  • RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden): A national partner in sustainable development.
  • Public Sector Stakeholders: Including several municipalities in Skåne, alongside initiatives like OpenTech and Future By Lund.

The “Safer Crossways” is a part of FFI (Fordonsstrategisk forskning och innovation) and supports Vinnova’s mission to drive vehicle transport innovations for a sustainable society. Vinnova, in collaboration with the Swedish automotive industry and public agencies, aims to position Sweden as a global leader in sustainable road transport.

Re:Play focuses on sustainable learning in preschools by providing educational toys, reusable materials, as well as knowledge and inspiration. Sigma Technology Informatics Solutions in Växjö has partnered with Re:Play as their digitalization partner, developing an IT platform to streamline the management of materials and knowledge sharing between preschools and suppliers.

Re:Play, established in 2022, is dedicated to building a more sustainable future by focusing on the very foundation of tomorrow—Swedish preschools, supporting both children and educators. The company provides repurposed and surplus materials for preschool activities and produces play and learning toys made from recycled materials, all aligned with the national curriculum. The materials used to create these educational tools come from industrial surplus and waste, which would otherwise have been discarded or incinerated.

From the very start, Re:Play turned to Sigma Technology for support in creating an innovative IT platform.

The software is already being used by Re:Play’s customers, including preschools across Kronoberg County. Beyond the IT platform, Sigma Technology is also working on developing a user-friendly sales portal, a flexible rental system, and an engaging knowledge-sharing module to further enhance the experience, ” says Philip Forsmark, consultant at Sigma Technology Informatics Solutions.

Re:Play’s customers, including preschools across Kronoberg County, are already using the platform. Besides, Sigma Technology is also working on developing a user-friendly sales portal, a flexible rental system, and an engaging knowledge-sharing module to enhance the experience further.

Together with municipalities and companies in Kronoberg County, we have identified a unique opportunity to create new value chains by reusing industrial surplus materials as educational resources for preschools. By developing a digital sharing platform, we make these materials easily accessible to preschools, regardless of location, and enable increased use of sustainable resources,” said Pontus Albinzon, founder of Re:Play. He added:
The collaboration with Sigma and their development team has been invaluable for us as a startup. Their flexibility, responsiveness, and innovative working methods have been like an extension of our team—almost like the employee we don’t yet have in our own organization. With Philip as our contact, an experienced and resourceful problem solver, we’ve felt incredibly secure in driving the project forward, even during times when we had to focus on other tasks that naturally arise in a startup.”

It has been a rewarding and inspiring collaboration with Re:Play. Their vision of contributing to sustainable learning aligns with our goal of creating a better tomorrow. We are also proud to have completed this project with our development team and by involving students from Linnaeus University. It’s important to us to show future system developers how technology can contribute to a sustainable society and inspire careers in tech,” said Johan Ericsson, Department Manager at Sigma Technology Informatics Solutions.

The partnership between Re:Play and Sigma Technology continues, with a new project planned for 2025. This initiative will focus on further digitalization and sustainable development in preschool environments, in collaboration with students from Linnaeus University.
